Owerri: Imo Teachers protest, demand 12 months unpaid salaries

Primary and secondary school teachers in Imo State on Wednesday cried out over the non-payment of their salaries running into 12 months. The teachers’ protest followed Governor Hope Uzodimma’s comments last weekend that “those complaining of unpaid salaries in Imo state are ghost workers or fraudsters”. The governor had told journalists, “This government has paid every genuine worker; those complaining of non-payment are either ghost workers or fraudsters. I am challenging anybody who has not received his or her salaries to come to Government House with his employment details and we will pay him or her immediately.” But, in response to the governor’s challenge, the affected teachers numbering over 300 stormed the government house, Owerri with their employment details and placards. While singing such songs as, “We’re not ghosts o; Hope, we’re not fraudsters”, the angry teachers alleged that their salaries were paid last in February 2020, just one month after Senator Hope Uzodimma became the governor of the state. An Imo State Magistrate Court, sitting at Umundugba, Isu local government area of the state, has convicted a 20-year-old school leaver, Peter Nwoke, for being the mastermind of a simulated group sex video that recently went viral, allegedly involving the state’s Public Complaints Commissioner, Chief Willie Amadi.     Giving a graphic account of what happened to the Magistrate, His Worship, C. P. Nnoromele, in suit number MCI/2C/2021, the Prosecutor, Mr Okereke Chikodi, said that soon after getting a formal complaint from Chief Willie Amadi, the Commissioner of Police set up a crack team of detectives to go after the people behind the alleged crime. According to the Prosecutor, after a painstaking investigation by the detectives, Peter Nwoke was arrested and he freely made a confessional statement to the police. The lawmaker representing Oguta state constituency at the Imo State House of Assembly, Frank Ugboma, has described as false, a statement made by the Speaker of the State Assembly, Collins Chiji, that former governor Emeka Ihedioha gave lawmakers refurbished vehicles as official cars. The speaker made the claim at a state function in Owerri, on Wednesday. Suspected armed robbers have attacked policemen at Egbu in Owerri and Owerre Nkworji in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, respectively The robbers attacked the policemen at Nkwerre on Monday, gave a sergeant machete cuts and snatched his service rifle. Our correspondent learnt that the armed robbers set ablaze the operational vehicles of the policemen. Our source said that the sergeant, who was rushed to hospital in Orlu with multiple machete cuts, died on Tuesday. Policemen beat youth unconscious in Imo

There was panic in Anara , Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State , on Monday , as policemen attached to the Anara Police Division beat a young man of around 25 unconscious. The policemen had gone for random arrest in the evening at the St . Innocent ’s junction in Anara and started beating the young man when he tried to inquire why he was being arrested .
