The wife of Imo State governor, Her Excellency, Ebere Ihedioha, has stated that the state government is committed to eradicating Polio and infant mortality in the state.
Lady Ihedioha who spoke while flagging-off the 2019 National Immunization Plus Days (NIMPDs) campaign at Umuelemai (The LGA headquarter) in Isiala Mbano local government area of the state, said Poliomyelitis was a disease affecting mainly children who are under 5 years of age.
She noted that it ranks among the top four child killer diseases in Africa.
She said that in demonstration of the state government’s commitment to tackling health challenges, the governor has procured equipment and paid counterpart fund for the Polio vaccinations.
In Her words: “To further demonstrate the commitment of this present government in tackling health challenges, the governor released funds for the procurement of emergency Cold Chain equipment and accessories to ensure adequate vaccine storage during this campaign and beyond.
“His Excellency has also approved and released counterpart funds for the smooth and seamless implementation of this campaign”.
The Imo first lady urged parents and families to tap into the enormous benefits of the immunization by ensuring that their kids are vaccinated within the period.
“The benefits of immunization cannot be overemphasized. The mortality and morbidity prevented by immunization translates into long term savings and potential economic growth for developing countries.
“We cannot continue to live with the fear of immunization. An alarming rate of families are still opposed to Immunization and some of our remote communities are still inaccessible. Hence the need for us to do all we can to reach every community and enlighten families and to reach every nook and cranny of the state.”
Also present at the event were the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Collins Chiji, the member representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency, Hon. (Engr) Obinna Onwubuariri.
Others were the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Onuimo LGA, Chief Silas Onyeiwu, his Isiala Mbano counterpart, Hon. (Mrs) Ngozi Oguike, some members of the state assembly and Isiala Mbano LGA executives of the Local Government.
