No fewer than 2, 000 people , including women and children, have been rendered homeless following the flood which submerged at least 70 houses in Orsu – Obodo community in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State .
The flood, our correspondent learnt, was as a result of the 10 -day non -stop rainfall in the state .
Sources said the flood , which destroyed farm crops , had unsettled the villagers .
The Deputy Governor of the state , Gerald Irona, who paid a visit to the community on Saturday , promised that the state government would come to the aid of the flood victims .
He said the state government would deploy flood management experts to the area to forestall a recurrence.
A statement by Walter Duru , media aide to the deputy governor , quoted him as saying , “On behalf of the government of Imo State , led by the governor , Chief Emeka Ihedioha , we are here to see things for ourselves . It is unfortunate . It is a natural disaster, but government will take steps to assist you and other affected communities . It is a pity . We have gone round all the affected communities and we have seen the level of damage .”
“We shall send experts to see how to ensure that this is controlled and that it does not happen again . I am here to commiserate with the victims of the flood. We have seen the extent of the damage . We have seen that most of the communities have been submerged. People have lost property , but we are very lucky that no life has been lost so far . We shall try to give palliatives to the victims . ”
