Imo speaker, seven lawmakers join APC

Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly , Collins Chiji , has defected to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party. Seven other lawmakers equally joined the ruling APC from the PDP . The speaker announced his defection and that of his colleagues during a plenary on Tuesday , The PUNCH reports . The plenary , which lasted for 15 minutes, came to an end after the speaker announced the names of the defecting lawmakers . Apart from the speaker , others who defected are Uche Ogbuagu ( Ikeduru ) , Dominic Ezerioha ( Oru West ) Chigozie Nwaneri( Oru East ) , Kanayo Onyemaechi ( Owerri West ) , Kennedy Ibe ( Obowo ) Onyemaechi Njoku ( Ihitte / Uboma ) , and Eddy Obinna ( Aboh Mbaise ) . With the defections , APC now has 18 lawmakers with PDP having eight in the Imo State House of Assembly . Uju Onwudiwe ( Njaba ) , who was declared the winner of the supplementary election held Saturday , on Action Alliance platform , is yet to be sworn- in by the speaker.

Charles Ezekwem has said that he resigned as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State because of a conspiracy to disgrace him out of office after the Supreme Court judgment that sacked Emeka Ihedioha and announced Hope Uzodinma as the duly elected governor of the state . Ezekwem, who spoke to journalists in Owerri on Tuesday said that he resigned in order to protect his political career . Supreme Court Sacks Ihedioha, Declares Uzodinma winner of Imo Guber Election

The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, January 14, has nullified the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Imo State. The apex court declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 9 governorship election in the state. In the unanimous judgement of the seven-member panel, read by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the apex court agreed that results in 388 polling units were unlawfully excluded during the collation of the final governorship election result in Imo State. Justice Kekere-Ekun said with the results from the 388 polling units added, Mr Uzodinma polled a majority of the lawful votes and ought to have been declared the winner of the election by the independent national electoral commission, INEC. Consequently, she voided and set aside the declaration of Mr lhedioha as the winner of the 2019 governorship election. The court ordered that the certificate of return wrongly or unlawfully issued to Mr lhedioha be immediately withdrawn by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a fresh one be issued to Mr Uzodinma as the elected governor. “Vote due to the

Supreme Court suspends hearing of Tambuwal, Ihedioha, four other govs appeals

The hearing of the appeals of Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano States , including four other governors was suspended by the Supreme Court on Monday . Other governors , whose appeals were affected are Emeka Ihedioha ( Imo) , Bala Mohammed ( Bauchi) , Simon Lalong ( Plateau ) , and Samuel Ortom ( Benue ) . Before the apex court in Abuja suspended the hearing of the governorship appeals from the six states , there was rowdiness and high noise level in the court. The Chief Justice of Nigeria , Justice Tanko Muhammad , was also present in the court . Meanwhile , the Supreme Court on Monday said it adjourned till Tuesday the hearing of 13 appeals filed in respect of the governorship tussles in six states . Muhammad abruptly suspended proceedings after indicating that an unnamed member of the seven -man panel was seriously ill . Tension as suspended Imo LG chairmen reject sacking

There was tension in the early hours of Monday in Imo State when the suspended chairmen of the various local government areas besieged their council headquarters and vowed to resume duties. The suspended council bosses had relied on the Supreme Court judgment in a case between the suspended chairmen in Ekiti State and the state government . They argued that the apex court had declared that no governor had legal right to suspend elected council bosses. Attempts to prevent the suspended chairmen from resuming duties, led to clashes in most LGAs in the state . The suspended LGA chairmen and their councillors had mobilised their supporters to the councils while the Interim Management Committee chairmen equally mobilised their supporters to the various council headquarters .
